Today we were at Fort Scratchley in Newcastle for the Queen's Birthday celebration.
The Historical Society put on a show for visitors which consists of the firing of the guns, tunnel tours at the fort, a pipe band and this bunch of Dad's Army (I think Historical Society volunteers), plus lots of other things to see.
The rain held off all day which was good too after all the rain we have had in the last few days.
Do you know I am ashamed to say we don't seem to celebrate the Queens birthday here....they do in NZ too......how bad that makes us look! Mind you we have had a lot of Bank holidays over the last few weeks. Very smart soldiers.
I was just thinking the same as Pat @happypat we really don't seem to celebrate the Queens birthday here. This really reminds me of watching Dad's Army growing up, they all look very proud and respectful.
@happypat@paulaw Any excuse for a public holiday here I think. We will celebrate anything. The Historical Society at the Fort put on special days throughout the year, ie Anzac Day, Australia Day, Queens Birthday, etc plus a few other occasions. We went to a music evening there a few months ago. Really good night that was. They are open most weekends too and do tunnel tours under the fort. A good day out.
Nice to see some deeply ingrained UK traditions still going strong in the New World. Some of these memories seem to have faded in the modern day Old Country, or so it seems to me, but perhaps it's something to do with one's age.
