As it is Remembrance Day today I thought I would post early. It is now 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month and I thought the time would be appropriate for today's photo.
Remembrance Day is not a public holiday in Australia, however many workers stop what they are doing at 11am for a minute of unified silence before resuming work again.
Those who join in this act of remembrance include teachers, students, politicians, and workers of public and private sector enterprises.
Many people wear artificial poppies on the day and key political figures make speeches in remembrance of the nation’s fallen heroes. Services are held at 11am at war memorials in suburbs and towns across the country, at which the Last Post is played by a bugler and a one-minute silence is observed. Remembrance Day has been partly eclipsed by ANZAC Day as the national day of war commemoration in Australia.
My Remembrance Day photo was taken at the War Memorial in Canberra earlier this year.
At the end of each day, commencing at 4.55 pm AEDT, the Memorial farewells visitors with its moving Last Post Ceremony. The ceremony begins with the singing of the Australian National Anthem, followed by the poignant strains of a Lament, played by a piper. Visitors are invited to lay wreaths and floral tributes beside the Pool of Reflection. The Roll of Honour in the Cloisters lists the names of more than 102,000 Australians who have given their lives in war and other operations over more than a century. At each ceremony the story behind one of these names will be told. The Ode is then recited, and the ceremony ends with the sounding of the Last Post.
It is a very moving ceremony and I have attended it three times now and each time it brings a tear to the eye.
I was very impressed with the war memorial when I went there, it contained far more than I expected. The displays were outstanding, and I found it very moving.
Thank you for your comment on my poppies at the Tower picture and choosing to follow me. One of the unexpected benefits for me of 365 is the insight into different parts of the world and how we celebrate the same event differently.
They have been having that same ceremony every night at dusk while the poppies have been displayed at the Tower of London. Lovely to hear that your Remebrance day is pretty much the same as ours.
Beautiful shot Babs. We went to the Menai Gate in Belgium whilst living there. That was the most moving of all parades and we've been to so many over the years. It's been grey and wet all day here. Seems to fit somehow!
Brilliant image beautifully shot Babs, I for one appreciate the accompanying information, Shops, offices, factories and schools observe the one minutes silence at 10:00 am today in the UK;)
