The Art of Whakairo

The traditional art of whakairo (carving) is a Maori traditional art of carving in wood, stone or bone.

The Maori Arts and Crafts Institute at Whakarewarewa in Rotorua is a stronghold of traditional carving skills.

It was fascinating to watch the students creating their artworks.

Fabulous. My grandmother collected small pieces to bring home when she visited Aus and NZ many years ago. We still have one or two pieces.
