T & G Mutual Life Assurance Society - Then and Now

As you can see in this 'then and now' photo the T & G Mutual Life Assurance Society building hasn't changed much in the last 140 years. The T & G stood for Temperance and General.

Sadly the small building directly in front of the T & G in the 'then' photo didn't fare so well. It was damaged in the 1989 earthquake and had to be completely demolished.
Can see, in the 'before', there is new building behind T&G. it is good that the facade of T&G has been kept intact. it is quite an imposing building.

Immensely interesting. Love the old tram, too. I hope there's one of those in a museum somewhere. My Dad had a tray truck like that one. Family and friends would sit on the back, legs dangling, and drive into the bush for a picnic. Broken Hill Days.

Very impressive building. Great looking tower on the top of it.

Impressive love the tram

Great architecture nice to see its remained the same over the years, what an interesting comparison Babs great idea for a theme, must have been devastating for the city and its people in 1989:)

Enjoying your 'then and now' photos

So interesting to see Babs. Didn't companies have great names in the past!

very nicely done...Sydney??
June 7th, 2017
Great to see such a contrast of eras. Fav

Sam
I love that tram!
June 7th, 2017
No change at all except for some paint, maybe. Thanks for sharing this lovely diptych.
June 7th, 2017
Looks very similar

It has certainly stood the test of time. I wonder what the awful concrete push buildings of today, will look like in 140 years?
June 7th, 2017
I love the ' then ' photo complete with the wonderful tram :)
June 7th, 2017
It is great that this building has been maintained all these years and that it has withstood the tests of time.
June 7th, 2017
Super comparison shots...The then shot is well done. The now shot has a great perspective.
June 7th, 2017
Great comparison shot. Love it and I love the trolley, too.

Love this series

Great comparative shots
June 7th, 2017
Intriguing to see them side by side and how little has changed in its exterior.
June 7th, 2017
How wonderful that it is pretty much the same, even the little balcony is still there - rather curious as to why that window is the only one that has one... Plus I see (in the older picture) that the building next to it has only one balcony too, how strange. Lovely to see the tram as well.
June 7th, 2017
Interesting to see the changes in the street, if not the building. Good to see at least one building has survived intact.
June 7th, 2017
Amazing, it looks newer now than it did then!! Nice to see it's being well looked after!
June 7th, 2017
Thanks for sharing

Great shots of the building that`s survive the years.
June 7th, 2017
Good to see that lovely building still standing & still looking impressive. Although it's old it strangely has a modern look to it.
June 7th, 2017
Such an interesting photo of both times. Love the tram in the older photo.
June 7th, 2017
What an interesting juxtaposition and it still looks a good 'contemporary' building! What a pity you no longer have trams - or do you?
June 7th, 2017
Lovely to see the contrast xx
June 7th, 2017
lovely old building
June 7th, 2017
Interesting that the small building suffered in the earthquake rather than the tall one. Nice comparison of shots :)
June 7th, 2017
What an interesting before and after shot - there is practically no difference and as you say, this building has fared so well over the years which is good to see. Very little sign of wear and tear.

Pam
Nice then and now!
June 8th, 2017
Great comparison shot!
June 8th, 2017
It's impressive when a building like this stands the test of time. It looks just as good today as it did "then"!
June 8th, 2017
Wonderful shot and comparison of this lovely building.
June 8th, 2017
@jorlam Thanks Jorlam. I think the façade had to be repaired after the earthquake, but so glad the building was saved.
June 8th, 2017
@ethelperry Nice Memories Ethel. Do you come from Broken Hill? A good friend of ours was born there 84 years ago. He has lots of stories. Don't know if you know the McMahon family.
June 8th, 2017
@littleconnie I think all the T&G buildings around Australia have similar architecture.
June 8th, 2017
@pcoulson A friend of mine worked in a bank just down the road from this building when the earthquake hit. She said it was awful.
June 8th, 2017
@hrs Newcastle.
June 8th, 2017
@merrelyn I don't think the new concrete buildings have any where the same character as these old buildings. Newcastle is slowly being replaced with the concrete jungle structures.
June 8th, 2017
@stephanies Maybe the office with the little balcony is where the bosses office was. It would have a great view of Newcastle harbour from the balcony.
June 8th, 2017
@dolphin A lot of the buildings had to be repaired quite severely after the earthquake.
June 8th, 2017
@maskerade No we don't have trams at the moment. The rail line from Wickham to Newcastle was closed in December 2014 because it disrupted the traffic where the rail lines crossed the roads. They are now going to replace it with a light rail (tram) service, also from Wickham to Newcastle at a cost of over $200 million that will travel almost the same route and apparently will still disrupt the traffic. There's progress for you.
June 8th, 2017
@rjb71 I think there was some controversy about the building actually being demolished at the time.
June 8th, 2017
@helenhall The T&G has had a lot of facelifts since the earthquake as there was damage to its façade but they have restored it so well.
June 8th, 2017
Wonderful comparison shots! :-)
June 8th, 2017
Fascinating to see the two side-by-side, I love before-and-after pairs like this, so much to see.
June 8th, 2017
Another great pairing. The building is virtually indistinguishable from its old self.
June 8th, 2017
Perhaps at some point you could display your diptychs in your community for others to see?
June 9th, 2017
It's nice to see how well it's been maintained.
June 10th, 2017
well maintained :)
