Stroopwafel by overalvandaan

Stroopwafel

Maayke challenged me to take a picture of something that reminds me of the Netherlands.

Stroopwafels! Even though you can now get them in the supermarket here in Wales, it's still not the same.

My mother used to, and still does by the way, buy fresh stroopwafels on the market every Friday. You can watch them being made. Sometimes, in the holidays, we would join my mother and get a doublesized one. The caramel syrup still hot, the waffle still warm. Also we would get 'kruimeltjes' in a white paper bag. They are the left over cuttings of the waffle. When we were older, we would put the stroopwafel on top of our cup with hot coffee, to make the waffle and syrup soften a bit.
@maaayke I ate too many stroopwafels today :-)
Thanks for the challenge it was fun and yummy, though not as nice when eating them at home, at the kitchen table with my parents.

Hoe Nederlands... stroopwafel en een beker met het decor van een rode zakdoek. Beetje heimwee?

Saxa, do you get the Tregroes Waffles ones? they are made in Llandysul, and I used to work there when I lived in Wales, the bakery is owned by a fellow Dutchman. They also make amazing chocolate covered ones. Nice image btw

I love this shot because it's full of memories and sentiment. I've never had an authentic stroopwafel from the Netherlands but I know it must be even tastier...

Will be added to my must Do's when we visit your home land again soon. I do the top of the cup thing as well, chips and mayonnaise was the other great Dutch culinary discovery.

A nice memory. I hope these are just as tasty as you remember them being. (And they look delicious, too, by the way.)

This is making me hungry! I'm actually going to write this down as I will be travelling to the Netherlands in two weeks. I have never been even though half of my family (my mother's side) is from there. They immigrated to the US in the 1930's from Hangelo and never went back. I know next to nothing about that side of my family and it is someplace that I would like to experience....though, not going to boring Hangelo!

@blueberry1222 Hengelo in Overijssel or in Gelderland, we have two Hengelo's. Great you're travelling to our small little country! Guess you're seeing more of Europe too?

I love your story and your image. I've never had one, and it looks delicious!

My mom spelled it hangelo-o...it's whichever one that got bombed off the map in WWII...they had a train station or something strategically important. I looked it up a few years ago and it didn't sound like the city ever really came back. I hate war. But...I will be travelling to Oslo and several cities in the Netherlands...my husband's 40th bday trip.
