My sister Barbara and her granddaughter Sophie on the beach at Dungeness. What a wonderful strange place. You need to go there to know what i mean!! We had a fabulous fish and chip lunch at The Pilot pub - still as good as it was years ago!!
@maggiemae@salza Not a good walking beach as it is soft shingle which drops away steeply down to the water. Dungeness is one of the largest areas of shingle in Europe. A fascinating place.
@taffy Dungeness is the largest area of shingle in Europe and is dotted with rare plants and desert flowers. It is an RSPB Nature reserve and many birds can be seen there. At the tip of the promontory is Dungeness Nuclear Power Station. In addition to the power station and the two lighthouses there is a collection of dwellings. Some of the homes, wooden houses mostly, many built around old railway coaches are owned by fishermen whose boats lie on the beach. Many old and abandoned boats can be seen. Many of the wooden houses have been modernised inside but still look the same from the outside. It looks almost like a shanty town. The houses are all spread out over the huge area. It can have a really eery atmosphere there especially in winter when it is quite bleak. I love it there. Unfortunately I didn't have my wide angle lens with me to get a shot of the whole landscape. I did take some shots of the boats at the edge of the shingle where they have been pulled up high on the ledge which drops down to the sea.
