Later in the afternoon we visited Cape Spear which is the most Easterly point of Canada and the Northern American continent. A lighthouse sat on top of a steep hill with many steps leading up to it. Louise and Ken set off up the steps while I decided to go down to the cliff edge where there was a watching point. I was hopeful to see some seabirds. I immediately saw gannets coming round from the next cove and flying across in front of me. Wow they are so beautiful and very elegant when flying!! The way was blocked to the next cove as they are doing work on the pathways. I stood on the lookout deck taking shots of gannets. Suddenly a woman tapped me on the arm and said "Whales!!" I looked over to where she was pointing and suddenly the whale blew from his blowhole!! So exciting and I got lots of shots. There were two whales and they came in very close to the shore just skimming the surface. I could see an aquamarine colour moving through the water parallel to the rocks. It went on for ages with the whales first rolling and then blowing the water. They didn't breach sadly but at least I have seen whales on this trip. In fact when I looked up which type of whale they were it seems they are humpback whales and the aqua colour I could see was his flippers. What a great day - the photos are not as clear as I would like but I just had to share with you my first wildlife captures from Newfoundland!!
It was just the sort of animal-afternoon Pam's been waiting for! She hasn't yet seen a moose, but we did eat moose burgers for supper! Ken and I bought a packet at a small, local grocery and we had them with toast...not at all gamy as one might think...quite palatable!
Nice bird and whale captures, Pam! You were so excited to show us the back of your camera, and just knew it must be a whale! Delighted for you!
Fabulous, no wonder you were excited. Interesting about the humpbacks, some have shown up in Port Philip Bay (ie where Melbourne is) as they do every year on their migration.
