Using old pictures to show parts of the past that I am Thankful For in November on Mondays brings me to my great grandmother. She was born among the Sioux in 1875 and lived through the dreadful time of the Little Bighorn and Wounded Knee. She was Married at 17 to a stage driver and they worked to help Buffalo Bill Cody establish the town of Cody, Wyoming, They hauled the Cherry Wood Bar from The Train Depot in Red Lodge Montana through the crazy switchbacks of the dirt road to get it to the Irma Hotel in Cody where it still is. It was a gift to Buffalo Bill after the wild west show performed for the queen of England. Emma was disowned by her father for marrying a white man and never got to see her Mom or her Sioux relatives until he died when she was 56.
She was alive and a vivid part of my life until I was 10 and I am so thankful for the memories of this vibrant, tiny woman
What a great memorial! My grandfather was Lakota Souix at the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. He, too was turned away by family by marrying a white woman, but they never reconnected, sadly! This is a great memorial and collage!
Really? Looks like your ancestors may have crossed paths with mine! Buffalo Bill was a friend of my great-grandfather's family in Miller, South Dakota. Sitting Bull was also a family friend.
What a wonderful heritage,Dixie,a so nice to have these old photos to treasure!! I wonder if digital will leave such a lasting impression in years to come!!
