My music teacher husband was a chemistry major with the hobby of working on a pottery wheel when we met during freshman year of college in Powell, Wyoming.
He gave me the little treasure pot that he had made by hand. His pottery had won him a scholarship to a different college but he turned it down, so I will be forever grateful that this talent remained only a hobby.
In the treasure pot are gum wrappers from Beemans, Clove and Blackjack gum, and some have been woven into a chain. My grandmothers purse was always full of gum for all the kids, and at church she would quiet us wit gum and keep our hands buy making the chains while we listened. My cousin even made one long enough to circle her bedroom.
The Buddha and long life man are memories from my student years in Beijing.
Three Good Things
1. grandmas who understand what it feels like to be a kid
2. a husband who chose the same Jr. College I did, just because
3. traditions, cousins by the dozens and shared memories of childhood
@maggiemae When I went to school there, indoor heating was only legal between Nov. 15 and May 15 and during that season, so much coal was burned that every time I washed my face the cloth tuned black to say nothing of what happened if I blew my nose.
I used to love making those gum wrapper chains! I don't know what happened to them either. I guess my mom threw them out at some point, or maybe I did. Nice shot.
