When I was a student in Beijing in 1987, this shawl cost me $7 from a woman who was paid 50 cents a day to embroider, and who knew when she went blind early, as they all do, that there were no benefits waiting. I loved the beauty she had created in that ugly reality, then I saw her children laughing and realized how much more beautiful the simple things of life were than I had realized.
beautiful handiwork. the reality of life for some is rather different from us here. the benefits she got would have been far more precious to her than we imagine.
