Future warmth

The sacrifice of a tree, the labor of men in the forest who I barely meet as they dump a truck at my house, the effort of the family as we haul and stack and then haul again, to the house and start a fire which will glow and light the room while heating the home. It’s a sacred and old fashioned ritual, and one with a layer of guilt.

I know the feeling- we heat with wood too. When the "sick" trees come, I don't struggle as much. But when it's a tree that was cleared for a home or cosmetic purposes, I always feel so sad.
