Summer around 1998

I moved in to this house after having moved 13 times in the past 12 years. Now we have lived here for 25 years and my husband is itching to tear it down and build a better home for two elderly people, walk in tub, one level, easier heat than a wood stove, no rat highways in the walls, no steep stairs and 25 years of clutter. I see his point but the memories in this cold, old barn of a place have been wonderful.

This is a summer evening when his big sister (she later died of heat stroke on a Grand Canyon backpacking trip) and her husband came down from Salem for a weekend and bought us a deck table. We had two boys about 3 and 4 years old and the ruggedness of this old logging cabin was great for their energy. When we bought the place we had to laugh because it was advertised as five bedrooms and a swimming pool.
