I didn't know you had done this side by side comparison Peter, I have just come across it. A username in the heading of your image won't inform the person you've responded to them, you need to select reply, and then type your text along with the username of the person you're responding to. I hope this make sense? Your RHS image is definitely less distracting for me. My view is drawn to your subjects and not constantly flicking to the box.
