We supposedly have a major winter storm heading our way...significant snow and ice accumulation is expected late tonight and through the day tomorrow. These neighbors decided to be proactive and have some huge dead limbs removed yesterday rather than take their chances with a possible disaster. In less dramatic measures, everyone around here is clearing the store shelves of milk, bread, beer, bottled water, toilet paper, generators, batteries, and sleds. We Southerners take winter storm warnings very seriously. :) I made sure I had the ingredients for the chili recipe in the latest issue of "Cook's Illustrated" magazine and Tom made sure we had plenty of wine in stock. We're good ~ Let it snow! :)
Sounds like you are ready! It was snowing here for two days (on &off) Friday and Saturday. It finally stopped last night around 7pm so we quickly cleared the driveway, walkways etc. Now they are saying another storm Wednesday...I am not happy! I hate snow!!! I guess I am going to need a lot of chili and wine to get through this winter! Hope you fare better down south then up here in the north!
That's one thing I've noticed moving here--all the french toast making supplies are cleared off the shelves before a storm! We're supposed to get a foot by tomorrow too--my girls are hoping school gets canceled. Hmm....now when I was a kid, the only way school got canceled was if the temp fell past minus 32 degrees.
Great shot!! our stores were completely out of milk and bread last night and its not suppose to hit us until late this afternoon (6pm) in fact my daughter has softball practice today! we are a bit farther south than you...stay safe!
How good of them to be prepared, especially for the safety of others too! Yes, we Southerners get a little carried away when a winter storm is about to hit. :)
Good to be prepared! Good luck getting through the storm! I just read that when storms are announced the first foods to be gone from the shelves are chips, popcorn and candy. Maybe that's just up here. :) But at least you're prepared with the solid stuff! When we lived in Fayetteville we got a storm with about 3-4 inches and my husband and I didn't really think anything of it so we didn't stock up with extra stuff. The stores shut down for two days!!! So as I said - good to be prepared!
@clarissajohal Hope your girls get their wish! I used to tell my girls that my mother made us go to school even when school was canceled. :) Stay safe and toasty warm ~ and enjoy whatever the storm delivers to your part of the state!
@caeralee The stores have been absolute crazy places! :) Right now it's a beautiful, but cold, sunny day here in CLT. You'd never guess that anything ominous was approaching. You stay safe, too, Jennifer! I think ice is the big story for points south of us...even worse than snow.
@hannahturpin We're a little nutty about the snow only because it doesn't happen here very often...and that's a GOOD thing!! :) I would imagine K'ville is bracing for snow. Stay safe and warm!
I don't get it. Transplants do the same in NE, buy milk, bread and other things. If we loose power the milk will go bad. And the storm only last a day with a day of clean up, why do people buy food for weeks? Native New Englanders just sit out the storm.
Nice shot...that's a tall tree! I always keep extras in the house cuz I live in the country and there aren't stores on every corner like in the city! I don't go crazy when they predict storms cause we usually don't get them here. (I wish!).
@cirasj I think Southerners go a little snow crazy just because it happens so infrequently. And it takes a little longer for things to get back to normal simply because we don't have the extensive lineup of snow removal equipment in southern cities. The interstates and major highways get cleared, sort of, but as far as secondary roads and neighborhoods and subdivisions go, you're on your own. :) Makes for rather hazardous travel for days...hence the stocking up of groceries and supplies. I suppose if the power was to go out you could always put the milk and other perishables in a snow bank. :)
@peggysirk The only time I was concerned about some food was a couple years ago when we lost power for only 6 days. Some people around us lost power for almost 2 weeks. Lucky our house is wired for a generator because without power, we do not have water (we have a well). Good luck with the storm.
@seattle@lenslooker Thanks, Constance and Pat! We've got good food, good wine, good books, some good football games today and tomorrow night...bring on the snow!
@girlie We are absolutely set for whatever comes our way! Tom even bought some new dress snow boots yesterday so he could make his way to the office tomorrow. :)
When I first saw this picture I thought it was a squirrel up in the tree. Then I looked and read further and now I'm a little dizzy! That's a job I wouldn't want! I agree that you are set with some wine and the ingredients for some good chili, but I would have to add some good chocolate to that list. Not a lot, just enough to keep me alive. Enjoy your cozy time. Sometimes being stuck at home is nice.
I hope the winds aren't as bad as they are expecting! Hopefully you will be safe and out of harms way! I will be thinking of you! Enjoy your chili & wine. Mmm, margaritas and chili sound pretty good too. :)
Wow...the weather globally has been surreal lately. When we lived in the pacific islands people used to defrond their coconut trees before a cyclone to mimimise damage too.
