Pollen Offender by peggysirk

Pollen Offender

This is one of two 120 ft (36.5m) oak trees in the backyard that have been dropping the pollen pods (from yesterday's post) all over the place. I believe it's an Eastern White Oak. I have found out that the pods are actually called 'catkins'. A cute name for nuisance pollen. Was hoping to capture a few hanging in the tree, but I think today's strong winds have blown the last of them down. Yea. :)

Three good things:
1. Went shopping with a good friend today to help her find the perfect Mother of the Groom dress for her son's (my godson) upcoming wedding. We found it. :)
2. Ben and Jerry's New York Super Chunk Fudge ice cream for lunch...totally out of character for me, but it was excellent
3. A quiet, rainy Friday night at home tonight
Number 2 is ok when it's all you have for lunch - that's how I justify it! Grand tree.

@happypat Unfortunately, Pat, the wedding is just a few days before my daughter's due date. As I'm the one keeping Harper when her mommy and daddy head for the hospital I'm in a quandary as to what to do...

@happypat Forgot to mention, the wedding is out of town in Charleston, SC.

@peggysirk Oh bad timing but Harper has to come first ...it will be sods law no baby will arrive!!! Could you not all have a day in the wedding venue town, you at the wedding & daughter & family having a little day out then if anything happens they could drop Harper off with you & head for the hospital!!! I don't of course know how far away from your homes Charleston SC is...I have a feeling you are in NC?

@happypat We're in Charlotte, NC. It's about 3.5-4 hours from Charleston. I'm thinking I need to stick close to home. Harper and Molly really do need to come first. I'll send godson, Jackson, an extra nice wedding gift.

Good call on staying home. Harper needs you!!! I love gong south and seeing the size of the trees!!! Our northern trees don't have as long a growing season, and they seem much smaller than their southern cousins. But we have maples!

What a beautiful old oak! We get a lot of catkins from our birch trees. They sure can be messy but the price we pay for shade. Ice cream for lunch! Yum. Good think I have none in the house or I would be considering that for dinner. (I'm in a bit of a funk - snow flurries all day and lake and pond overflowing into garden. )

@barbsmith Sounds like you could use a Ben and Jerry's dinner, Barb. I can't believe how much snow has remained in the picture this Spring in certain parts of the country. Enough is enough!

I had no idea what a catkin was until this year and I learned it here. I also didn't know oaks dropped them. I bet they're fun to clean up like the helicopters maple trees drop
