The Phat Burrito is closing its doors forever at 3:00 today. The iconic restaurant led the rebirth of South End twenty years ago, turning an expanse of vacant warehouses and rusting trolley car tracks into a funky neighborhood of the weird and hip. As a result of the light rail train system, South End has become one of the hottest real estate markets in the country. It's sad to see growing redevelopment pushing out the establishments that gave South End its wonderful character.
One for the word of the day...Ugly Building. But it was so ugly that it was delightful.
Three Good Things:
1. A long line was already growing for the Phat Burritos final day an hour before it was to open.
2. Synchronicity
3. Girl Scout cookies have arrived
This brings to mind places in Dallas and Tucson that were "funky and fun" but sadly, they can be pushed out for redevelopment. On the other hand, I'm thinking of Taffy's @taffy photo in the meat-packing district that's being redeveloped into something more hip-but-still-eclectic. One generations good-ol' memories will make way for the next generations memories... (Time for Pollyana to mosey along now...)
