I attended a long exposure workshop on a white water mountain river last night. It was a fantastic evening of learning. The instructor talked about having an almost meditative approach to long exposure photography. He suggested sitting by the river first and just observing the flow, texture and patterns of the water before beginning to shoot. It was great advice that I will try to apply to other photographic situations. It was also the first time I've shot in full manual mode and in RAW. So excited to take those steps!
This kayaker surprised me. I was focused on shots of the river and all of a sudden saw him in my viewfinder. Just as quickly as he appeared, the river whooshed him away again.
@btorrey Thank you for the comment, Brenda. Yes, I was using a tripod. He was really a lucky shot. I was so surprised when he just popped into my viewfinder!
Interesting how his head was so still for that 1/10th of a second. I find it slightly disturbing to see the kayaker so sharp with the water so blurred.
Fabulous shot Lisa - haha that this kayaker was a photo bomber! Love the pop of red and the milky water. Brilliant. Congrats on full manual and RAW too. :-)
The water looks fantastic and the red of the kayak makes the shot for me. Quite like the idea of meditative photography - I'm a long way away from that most of the time.
Stunning shot - interesting that the exposure was long enough to make the water milky but short enough to make the kayaker fairly sharp. Well done for manual and raw as well - keep trying to pluck up courage to do that
Great advice! I love the idea of meditation before a shot! Although I often don't have the time, unless on holiday! Surprised to hear this is your first image in full manual mode. Lovely tones and that flash of red. Stunning. Has to be another Fav!
i can't believe it's your first time in full manual! wow. and SO jealous of your workshop. this is a wonderful scene and the kayak-er was icing on the cake!
