Running Wild

I attended a long exposure workshop on a white water mountain river last night. It was a fantastic evening of learning. The instructor talked about having an almost meditative approach to long exposure photography. He suggested sitting by the river first and just observing the flow, texture and patterns of the water before beginning to shoot. It was great advice that I will try to apply to other photographic situations. It was also the first time I've shot in full manual mode and in RAW. So excited to take those steps!

This kayaker surprised me. I was focused on shots of the river and all of a sudden saw him in my viewfinder. Just as quickly as he appeared, the river whooshed him away again.
What???? Your first time in full manual? Wow! Cool shot!

@nanalisarocks Thanks Lisa! Yes, I have been hanging around in aperture and shutter priority. There is a first time for everything, right?

@jayberg Thank you for your comment!

This is cool too. I like that the kayaker is mostly in focus and his motion stopped while the water is blurred. Were you on a tripod?

love how the water looks! nice capture Lisa!

@btorrey Thank you for the comment, Brenda. Yes, I was using a tripod. He was really a lucky shot. I was so surprised when he just popped into my viewfinder!

Great capture, well done you!

Amazing image, you have slowed the water but still got an action shot !
June 24th, 2013
Wow, what an intelligent advice. Meditation before shoot – I like it and will try it out – thank you for sharing this idea.

I think its great you got the movement of the water, yet it's like you froze the kayaker! Well done!
June 24th, 2013
That's great! Would love to try something like that ... soon! The kayaker looks great as well. Adds a splash of colour!
June 24th, 2013
Well done. Your focus on the kayaker was perfect.

So beautiful. That red kayak is a nice addition. :-)

Wonderful shot , Lisa !

Interesting how his head was so still for that 1/10th of a second. I find it slightly disturbing to see the kayaker so sharp with the water so blurred.
June 24th, 2013
Perfect positioning, and the red is a huge eye-catcher. I enjoy the blurred paddle to match the soft water.
June 24th, 2013
Wow - this is a awesome - the kayak really adds to the scene. Fantastic job!
June 24th, 2013
I love it when that happens. Without the kayak this would have been pretty. With it, it's special.
June 24th, 2013
Great! The splash of colour with the red kayak is perfect.
June 24th, 2013
Wow Lisa this is a fabulous shot, I love both the movement of the water and the kayaker! What a fabulous workshop!
June 24th, 2013
Fabulous shot Lisa - haha that this kayaker was a photo bomber! Love the pop of red and the milky water. Brilliant. Congrats on full manual and RAW too. :-)
June 24th, 2013
Superb - well done - jealous of your workshop
June 24th, 2013
The water looks fantastic and the red of the kayak makes the shot for me. Quite like the idea of meditative photography - I'm a long way away from that most of the time.
June 24th, 2013
Stunning shot - interesting that the exposure was long enough to make the water milky but short enough to make the kayaker fairly sharp. Well done for manual and raw as well - keep trying to pluck up courage to do that

Great advice! I love the idea of meditation before a shot! Although I often don't have the time, unless on holiday! Surprised to hear this is your first image in full manual mode. Lovely tones and that flash of red. Stunning. Has to be another Fav!
