100 Strangers : No. 48 : George

The Nottingham Green Festival was an excellent event for me to add some strangers to my project..

In a similar manner to stranger number 47 (Kadir) , George was on an information stall.. George's stall was for an organisation known as the "Cuba Solidarity Campaign " .

It was quite a striking stall with iconic leaflets with images of Che Guevara, Castro and the Cuban Flag.

I approached the stall and asked George what it was trying to achieve

George told me about the organisation and how it campaigns against the 50 year old blockade of Cuba

I asked George how he had become involved in the organisation. He said it started about 15 years ago, his wife was learning Spanish and as Cuba is a Spanish speaking country, it started from there.

George told me he had raised funds to pay for medical supplies etc. George told me that Cuba had a superb Health system. I told him that I was aware of that as a former work colleague of mine had done a sponsored cycle ride around Cuba and she had made me aware of the fact.

When I asked George for a photo he agreed but was a little worried that I might be working for a government organisation monitoring him ! I assured George I was just an amateur photographer and was only interested in telling his story for my project.

I took the shot inside George's Gazebo as I thought this would shield us from direct sunlight and would be ideal lighting. It certainly made some good catchlights in George;s eyes .

George gave me his email address and I promised to send him a picture of the event and a link back to my flickr project.

This picture is number 48 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

A good choice of position Phil, you avoided that shine too much light on the forehead. I think George will be pleased with his photo. I admire people who are so involved with their project that they go to such lengths to promote it.

Another fav for me, Phil, for the great portrait and for the narrative. Now that the US is removing the boundaries with Cuba George's organisation might be wound up (unless Donald Trump is elected president of the US, I suppose). Did you discuss this with him?
