THE BRIDGE AT MEADOWHALL by phil_howcroft

THE BRIDGE AT MEADOWHALL

My first picture edited with on picnik.com, to create a collage effect.

We went to Sheffield Meadowhall today (a big shopping centre / mall) which is next to the M1 motorway on the site of what was once a thriving steel works area.

Anyway next to the centre there is a pedestrian bridge (which nobody seems to use and seems to go nowhere). I was there for 10 minutes and nobody used the bridge, so I asked my wife and eldest daughter to stand in the frame as pedestrians (reluctant models).

I could not decide whether the image with pedestrians in works better that an image without pedestrians.

I think the best result would have been if they were in the right hand side image right at the end of the bridge as the right hand image has stronger lead in lines and shows the shadows off better.

The lighting is good, so that helps the composition. I did think of doing a black and white, but I've done a couple of those this week and wanted to keep a bit of variety to my 365 project.
I like this one in color!! The sky looks beautiful

@kerristephens Thanks Kerri, it is a winter sky, it's going to rain all day tomorrow, so the same location tomorrow will be dull and wet !

It might be interesting to see the contrast between today and tomorrow then!

@kerristephens Good idea Kerri, unfortunately I won't be there tomorrow, the shopping mall is 30+ miles north from Nottingham , we met our youngest daughter there who live another 30+ miles north of Maadowhall. So it was a good place to meet.... midway !

It must be rough having your daughter so far away!!

My opinion is , although I'm sure your wife and daughter are lovely, I prefer the focus to be on the architecture of this picture. Figures tend to break up the lines as your eye follows the railing to the horizon. I do like the contrast of the 2 shots together to challenge us. Well done.

@allie912 Allison , thans for that, I think in this cas I prefer the clean lines, but I do tend to like people in my landscape shots (btw I think we were commenting on each others pictures at the same time - we must have clicked 'post comment' in sync !)

Phil- I think you are right about commenting on each other's work at the same time. There is something amazing to contemplate about that. Parallel worlds existing simultaneously. Crazy.

I love the depth of field used in this image and the contrast of the green color on the bridge compared to the blue sky..nicely done!

As far as the two pictures, it really depends on what your intent is. I like the clean lines of the bridge if that is what you are showing me. If this is a street shot then I would want the people, but a closer view of them. Just my two cents... I really do like the one of just the bridge for composition sake.

..its the people-free one for me, and the angle is nicer.

@gill Thanks for your comments Gill, I like to have people in my landscapes, but in is a hard call between the two pics. Thanks again

@patsyjphillips Thanks Patsy. It is quite a nice bridge and the low afternoon winter sun helped the image

@sleepdozer57 Pete thanks for that. Its interesting to see who prefers which image

@seattle Constance, my intent was to show the bridge as a 'landscape shot' rathet than a street photo and the people in the left had side image were meant to give it scale and a minimalistic feel. Your 'two cents' are always very much appreciated , thank you very much.
