A bad night in New York by phil_howcroft

A bad night in New York

I went to New York last night, to see my team Bolton Wanderers play Rotherham United.

Rotherham United play their home games at the New York Stadium in a district of Rotherham known as New York

Rotherham is only a hours drive from Nottingham, so it was an easy trip to make for me and my mate Bill.

It was a bad night. The Wanderers have hit a rich vein of form and at the weekend had an excellent draw at Anfield against Liverpool FC in the FA Cup

We lost 4-2 last night. We were 4 nil down at one point. This shot show the Wanderers keeper about to clear the ball up the field. Bolton traditionally play in white jerseys, but last night played in their 2nd strip of navy jerseys.

Five of the six goals were scored in the nets we were sat behind (row 2) so we got an excellent view.

Shot with my little Panasonic TZ7 which is quite grainy in low light. You are not allowed to take a DSLR into an English Championship match (or a Premier League match) due to 'copyright issues'. The stewards were searching bags for cameras (among other things) on entry to the stadium. My 'M&S bag for life' contents of a packet of crisps, flask of hot Ribena and woolie Wanderers hat did not trouble the search. My little panny TZ7 wrapped up in my hat :)

874 Wanderers fans made the trip to South Yorkshire (8,760 total attendance). A decent following on a freezing night, winter night

To make matters worse, my car had been vandalised when I returned to the street it was parked on (no away car park at the New York Stadium). Somebody had decide it was a nice idea to break the passenger wing mirror off from bodywork. It was dangling by a wire !

Oh, what a night of disappointment you have had. I'm from Bury,n spent many a happy hour at Bolton market. Now study in Notts, n live in Sheffield, so can see this from all those angles. I can only commiserate in that R'ham is the poo that's left on the world's arse (no offence), and you would have been safer to park next to a scrapyard!

Sorry to hear your news, but photo looks bloody great!

It must take ages to get into the stadium if they search everyones bag! Bit ridiculous - you can put your iPhone in a shirt or trouser pocket and they would never know! The iPhone 6 takes just as good photos as a DSLR! This game is still very exciting to watch!

@thegrumpyhermit thanks grumpy , Bolton never win in Rotherham ! They have built the stadium on the reclaimed site of an old foundry ,surrounded on one side by a dual carriageway and the other side by a river . Great planning that ! Not exactly friendly for any visiting supporters . I won't repeat on an open forum what I said in a text message about my experience !

@maggiemae cheers maggie , that's the way it is at football grounds, they are not looking for just cameras !!

Sorry for the disappointments - losing the match and finding the car vandalised. Beautiful capture of the action. Seems there were many like you who have challenged the weather and attended to watch the match. I didn't know they do not allow cameras at the stadium. You can do that here.

I don't follow football, so its a good job I read your information carefully I was thinking "that's a long way to go to watch your team". Trotters lost eh! There's always next time, Its all blah blah blah to me. Good shot here though Phil.

I never knew there was a New York in Rotherham, the only place I have ever been kicked out of a pub! It does not surprize me your car got attacked they have some right roughuns there - what does this say about the younger me?!! I love the camera ensconced in a hat trick - remember that pensioner that passed out in a supermarket a few xmases ago? Had a frozen chicken under her hat and hypothermia set in! They did not do her for shop lifting - probably cos she did not get the bird past the checkout before keeling over! Love the shot by the way great colours.
