I have started shooting my mono portrait series in RAW, but I somehow managed to lose my RAW file for Steve's shot, so this is a jpeg edit in Rawtherapee
Steve is another member of Arnold and District Camera Club. He is our digital PDI coordinator. The grand title means it is Steve's responsibility to collect and collate all the digital images for our internal and external competitions. It is quite a big task and Steve runs the process smoothly
A retired engineer from Boots, Steve enjoys the technical aspects of photography. He knows all about 'colour space', monitor calibration and reading the histogram on the back of your camera.
I don't know if the background is a bit busy with the lines of the fence catching the eye, but maybe that's me being a bit too critical of my own shots
Do you find RAW better Phil? I shot in RAW for ages but when I bought an iPad I found it clogged up the memory so quickly......can't say I have noticed the difference! Good portrait here though ...nothing wrong with that!
@happypat thanks Pat, RAW files are so big and not recommended for processing on ipads. I've shot in jpeg for ages and to be honest I find not a lot of difference. RAW has more detail and you can push your edits further and bring our more details. I could probably have resolved the highlights caused by Steves silver hair if I had the original RAW file :)
The background makes it a natural and candid shot as compared to a studio shot! Thats so good and this guy looks strong and intelligent. No deep shadows here so the light is just right!
Another great portrait shot. I think the background is fine. I was interested in the exchange above re RAW and JPEG which I found reassuring as I use JPEG. I could do with an explanation from Steve on reading a histogram. I've tried but failed and cannot see how I could use it to improve shots.
@quietpurplehaze thanks hazel, i think if your shot is a good 'un ...exposed correctly etc , then jpeg works fine. If you want to do serious editing then some argue you should use RAW. That's my take on it , I admit to shooting jpeg most of the time :)
@sangwann you can do portraits dione, they are not difficult, go for it my friend
