I have been browsing some of the excellent portrait groups on flickr and noticed a style of letter boxing the subject and doing quite a close crop too. So I thought I would try it on one of my model pictures from the last model night at Arnold and District Camera Club
This is Paulette in a letterbox crop.
I think the result is quite stylish and striking. Hope you do too
Edited in Rawtherapee and GIMP, worth viewing large if you have the time
I think I know what you mean by letterbox now - a divided look to show something that the person wants to bring up. I think its got lots of possibility. This model needs a powder pat!
Very striking Phil and a fav for me! ( I tried a close crop of one of my strangers but It did not meet with much approval!! {I know because I asked for opinions!} )
@quietpurplehaze thanks for the fave Haze, I took inspiration from one of the many Flickr portrait groups (portraits with natural light I think ) ! You should try another close crop :)
@maggiemae maggie, letterbox just means do a crop shaped like a letterbox. I think it emphasises the subject
This close crop and letter box do work really well. Food for thought. What a beautiful looking lady. You have captur d her eyes with the light in really well.
I'm a great fan of a close crop for portraiture, it so often works well to emphasise the most telling part of the face : the eyes. It's surprising how often cropping, or composing, so that not all the head is shown adds to the impact. I think, as here, it makes for a good composition too, but not just in letterbox format.
Nicely done, the high-key, negative space works very well too.

OK, I will - have one ready. I got 4 portraits whilst in Cornwall - unexpected! Although that portrait lens seems to creep on to the camera!!!
