Gedling is a village, although looking at the photo it looks quite big for a village.
The spire of All Hallows Church dominates the landscape.
When I first moved from Bolton to Nottingham, to start my career in ICT, I lived in a rented house in Gedling for a couple of years. The house is somewhere to the right of the church in the upper right of the photo, but is hidden from view.
Gedling Country Park is set in 580 acres of open space, with footpaths, wildlife and stunning views over the surrounding areas. The space was once Gedling Colliery.
Gedling Colliery opened in 1899 and was closed in 1991. One hundred and twenty-eight men died at the colliery, which produced over a million tonnes of coal per year in the 1960s. The colliery developed a reputation as the "pit of all nations" because of the diversity of foreign miners who worked there. In the 1960s, 10 per cent of the colliery's workforce of 1,400 were originally from the Caribbean.
@marlboromaam thanks maggie, glad you like this little bit of the city, the racecourse (horses) in the bit of green in the top right hand corner
