Agfa 100 35mm Film : Phil in his Garden

I have been shooting with 35mm black and white film using my vintage lenses and some vintage cameras from my collection

Film : Agfa Photo APX 100 Professional
Film Speed : ISO 100
Camera : Pentax ME (1970's)
Lens : Pentax SMC 50mm f1.7
Negative : Photographed on my lightpad using a Sony A6000 with an Industar N61 53mm prime lens and extension tube and converted from negative to positive using GIMP photo editor

This is me in my garden. I spend a lot of time in my garden, it is quality time with fresh air and exercise. I keep my bushes trimmed, even the bush on my head is neatly trimmed (haircut every 5 weeks) . My initial thoughts about shooting with film is it is really "old school" and enjoyable. I'm used to having really fine detail from a digital image but when one zooms into a converted film negative that detail doesn't exist (maybe my technique). As you can see from my photo it does have a lovely feel to it.

Just to summarise the technical bit above, I've shot some black and white film with a vintage camera, got it developed and then photographed the negatives on a lightpad, using a Russian vintage lens.

Oh and the film was developed for me by Eddie from our camera club. An octogenarian who knows everything about film photography and processing. Eddie is going to develop all my 5 films and I've given him a Pentax 50mm prime lens from my collection (a duplicate lens)
I love your running commentary even though I don’t understand most of it. I just like your enthusiasm and curiosity to try new things. Did you take this with a timer or did your wife serve as your photographer? It’s a great portrait.

@allie912 allison, I got my wife to stand where I am in the photo and I focussed the camera (manual focus lens on a SLR), we then swapped positions and she took the photo of me ! Clever don't you think :)

Lovely tiered garden. I haven’t had a decent camera since my enormous Zenith back in the 90s. It was super-heavy but it produced some awesome photos. I enjoy the ease of an iPhone but I do miss the finesse of a camera-camera, if you know what I mean.

Great selfie with your usual lovely smile. So your wife had a finger in the pie in this shot, from what I read. Great result with the vintage camera. I always enjoy your narratives even though when you go into the technical aspects of the picture I understand how unliterate I am on the subject.

I do love the quality of film that nothing else can duplicate. A great portrait of you, in your happy place!

@ljmanning thanks laura, it is a bit different working with film and you have to work harder than digital to get a good result . It is quite liberating though

@happypat thanks Pat, I've been itching to have a go at black and white film for a while , so lockdown and the pandemic was a good opportunity to try it out

@sangwann thanks dione, it is all quite simple at the end of the day. You will have shot with film before , just not done the last bits

@casablanca thanks Casa' everywhere in our part of Nottingham is hilly !!!

@marlboromaam thanks Maggie, lol....World Famous
