100 Strangers : Round 3 : No. 285 : Daniel and Jay
My third set of strangers from Friday when I was in Nottingham.
Meet Daniel and Jay, two workmen from “Mellors Group Events” who were erecting a “Big Wheel” in Nottingham’s Old Market Square. The Big Wheel will be open to the public from the 15th November 2021 until the 31st December 2021 and will form the centre piece of Nottingham’s Winter Wonderland. The 60m high observation wheel is the largest transportable wheel in the UK
As I walked past the work area I saw Daniel and Jay leaning on the barriers separating the public from wonderland site.
“You’ve got a big job on” I told them
“Yes, it looks impressive, it’s just travelled up from Torquay” (I assumed it had been in Torquay for the summer season)
“Where’s the carriages, have they arrived yet?”
“They are behind us” Daniel said and pointed out to some big cages containing them.
“Oh Yes”
I pointed at Daniel’s sweat shirt and said that Nottingham was the home of the chief exec of the company they work for.
“That’s our boss over there” they told me (the site manager), who told me he was not having his photo taken (by this time I’d started photographing Daniel and Jay)
“Are you from Nottingham” they asked me
“Yes, I live here, although my accent is a Bolton accent”
“We’ve built a fair on the car park outside the Bolton Wanderers stadium” they told me.
“Ahh right”
“I hope you are not going to do anything dodgy with these photos” Jay said at which point they both laughed out loud (see my next photo when I post it)
Daniel and Jay are in a slightly different focal plane, meaning Jay is slightly out of focus. This was a popular technique a few years ago in photography, especially when photographing people at events, steam punks, goths etc. I’d have preferred them both sharp, in fact I asked them to move so I could get them against a backdrop of the wheel and in better focus, but I quite like this as is, so I am posting it.
