Ely Cathedral. Building commenced in 1083 (11 years after building commenced on Lincoln’s cathedral) and to be honest, Lincoln’s is in far better condition.
When Carole and I arrived, the Sunday service was ongoing; we were immediately apprehended as we cam through the door and told by a particularly officious individual that “there is a service on, you can wait quietly here or come back at ten to twelve” and then turned his back on us and loudly passed wind. 🤣🤣
Lovely shot Phil. The first time we went they were just gearing up for a memorial service they still allowed us in to take photos (free of charge) my wife got a bit uncomfortable as it was filling up with mourners and I was still snapping away!
That's religion for you. I think Ely was the first cathedral to charge entry fres, so they should be rich. However Cromwell wrecked it, so they might have started with his legacy? Did you find the only angel with an intact face?? It's a bit like hunting for the Lincoln imp.
@30pics4jackiesdiamond I think given the cost of running these sites (St Edmundsbury yesterday said £900 a day, Ely said it was £1500 a day) a small entrance fee is acceptable. I did spot the intact angel and pointed her out to Carole.
