This is me, sat with Roy Holland, who I called my second Dad sometime in the early 80s I think, before I met Carole. I was never that relaxed around my real Dad.
I first met Roy, when I was 14, when we moved to Thetford in Norfolk (where Dad’s Army was filmed) in February 1975 and Roy was the leader of the 3rd Thetford Scouts. I met his youngest son, Nigel, a day later and we have been best friends ever since.
Roy, and his Wife Mavis, with Nigel and his Brother Clive (who was away at Boarding School for much of the time) were a second family to me. They patched me up if I’d been fighting (I generally lost and turned up at theirs bleeding from somewhere), they cleaned me up if I was worse for drink, they got me out of far too much trouble for somebody not actually related to them. Carole met Roy & Mavis before she met my real Mum and Dad.
Sadly Roy passed in 2003 but I’m still in regular contact with his family.
