I learnt to touch type in the early ‘80s on Olympia typewriters (with keys blacked out). I am told I type ‘hard’ - hammering the keys on the keyboard as if I’m still trying tonget the mechanical letter to strike the platten through the ink ribbon. (70wpmnif anybody is interested (slows to around 5wpm when I’m looking for punctuation keys (we weren’t taught those))
I’ve never liked the keyboards on laptops, I always plug a USB desktop keyboard in the laptop. I don’t much like the screens either, and tend to use an extended monitor, again via USB.
My office, yesterday’s photo, will generally (if I’m there for the full day) have 2 laptops powered on, connected to 2 different networks, via some kind of VPN and 4 monitors alive with information.
The age we live in I guess - but in my humble opinion, it was gentler (yes, noisier) with those Olympia machines click clacking away.
Thank you for your views, comments and favs on yesterday’s offering. Much appreciated.
I'm with you Phil. I don't like keyboards on laptops either and if I can I tend to plug in a keyboard too. I also don't get not using a proper mouse either. We do use laptops when we are away or doing presentations, but I much prefer my desktop computer with large monitor and proper keyboard and mouse. David has two monitors because he does a lot of graphic work. Not possible on a tiny laptop screen.
I feel better now, ha ha.
I learned too on an Olympia & had to really ' tone down ' & not punch the keys on my keyboard. I learned to touch type by typing...." The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.' 100's of times...Memories!
I don't like laptops either. Your keys are very clean and sharp. The letters are worn off mine. My husband can't even type in my keyboard because he can't see the letters. I learned in a manual. Tyler over 100 won back in the day. Not so fast any more. Typing legal docs for 45 years leads to good typing.
I still have trouble using a mouse because when I learned we had a tea towel over our hands so we couldn't see the keys (pretty sure it was an Olympia) and if we removed our hands from the keys we were whacked with a ruler! funny how things stick!
I feel better now, ha ha.
