My Mother left me this oil lamp in her will; I'd never shown much interest in it when she was alive, so I'm guessing that she knew that in the 1970s I broke the shade when home alone and then spent a number of days trawling through the yellow pages to replace it before she and my family came home from holiday. I knew it wasn't a perfect match and, at the age of 17 or so, was amazed I'd got away with it. She certainly never said she'd noticed, but I've always felt that this was her way of saying that she did; Mother's know things.
