80 years ago, the brainchild of Sir Barnes Wallis and delivered by Group Captain Guy Gibson, Commanding Officer of 617 Squadron, Operation Chastise was the bombing of 4 of the Nazi regime’s Dams in the Ruhr Valley utilising Wallis’ amazing ‘bouncing bomb.’
The International Bomber Command Centre to the south of Lincoln has a commemoration to the 53 Air Crew who died in the bombing with 55 steel silhouettes underneath the IBCC giant Lancaster wing. Wallis and Gibson are also commemorated.
A very moving tribute to these incredibly brave young men who gave their tomorrows for our todays.
