Common Whitetail (Plathemis lydia)

After a bit of rain and a shift in the wind, things here were much better today-- though everything's still grey and the air feels heavy or thick. I still didn't go outside for long, but we did go on a short walk; we saw a number of dragonflies and damselflies as well as a small assortment of butterflies and birds, one yellowjacket and one snake. That's a lot more wildlife than we've seen lately, which seems like a good sign.

We saw probably six or seven Common Whitetails sitting in an area about the size of a wooden skid/pallet-- all male except one. They're supposed to be territorial (especially the males), so that seemed odd, but it gave me a few chances for pictures. This is one of the males.
I've never seen anything like this before. Wonderful shot
