March of the cicadas

We could not believe what we found in the depths of the forest- first spotted by Wylie 2. Can you see all the black cicadas all the way to the very top of the Spotted Gum tree? As it was late afternoon and cool they were quiet. Must be deafening when they get going on a hot day!

Haven't seen them like this before. We have many thousands sounding off each day just now. After a while you do close the sound out, but a lot of people are intensely upset by the noise. I think they will finish towards the end of January....l hope

Oh gosh. Well spotted. I wonder if they are 17-year sort that hatched here earlier in the summer.

@randystreat not sure about this species, I think 7 years is more common but could be even less
