Pelicans by pusspup

Pelicans

Lake Eyre is in Central Australia and generally has no water in it. At the moment flooding rains have moved down from the North and a rare event is that there is water in the lake! We were lucky to take a flight over the expansive but shallow lake and I shot this large flock of pelicans which took to the air at our approach.
Tricky out of the window of a small plane!

Such a fabulous opportunity to see a rare experience :) Also a fantastic capture. I love the shadows on the shallow water.

Fab shot of the pelicans. They must be exhausted by the time they arrive at Lake Eyre. Be interesting to find out how far they flew!

@teodw I believe they can travel thousands of km. I've seen them hitching a ride on handy thermals, not much flapping. Still, its a long way!!
