Jinks and I had a walk round this market town which is very local to us. I love the Georgian architecture & the town is always beautifully decked out with flowers in the summer. It has several individual shops - butcher, greengrocer, fishmonger, baker, hardware - as well as good cafés and restaurants. There is also a vineyard nearby.
It started as a Saxon village & houses the ruins of Bishops Waltham Palace.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
A nice little market town, Hazel, nicely portrayed here. I don't know it but it is immediately recognizable as the England we love, but is fast disappearing.
oh wow! happy memories indeed! Is the deli still there....The still room I think? I used to sell some craft work there. Also I rented a little space in the mill, which had a pottery and some craft units.....is that still there? You've captured the atmosphere of this lovely village so well, beautiful baskets.
@wordpixman There's been huge controversy here as Sainsbury's propose to build a supermarket just outside the town, behind the Bishops Palace. I think it's going ahead.................
@Cherrill There is a deli but it's fairly new so probably not the same one. I think you mean the mill near the bridge which if so, yes is still there - I think I shall have to go back and take some more pics!
@quietpurplehaze ... It's a thorny problem isn't it? People clamour for cheap food, which is understandable, but they sacrifice so much by giving way too easily to the big bullies, who woo the councils with what I have to describe for legal purposes as generous gifts to the community.
What a lovely little town. David and I would love to travel one day and visit places like this. Its on our bucket list. Your collage has represented the town well. Thanks for sharing Hazel.
I agree the architecture is wonderful - I would probably get run over because I would be looking everywhere except the road. The colourful flower displays add to the romance and the rustic charm.
@doblaine Well it's very busy! Somehow I've cropped out practically all the cars & people. Jinks was a hindrance really having to hold his lead with one hand & keep him from trying to make friends with non-doggy people(!), make sure neither of us got run over, & take some shots. Next time it's a solo visit.
Another great collage, Hazel! You are the "collage master". ;] And what a lovely town! Hope it can stay this way despite the "big box" competition. We know what that's done to our downtown here in Woodland. :[
