Day 7: Purple - purple poison by quietpurplehaze

Day 7: Purple - purple poison

This plant is aconitum or monkshood and not just the flower but every part of it contains a lethal neurotoxin. We saw it for the first time during our recent week's holiday, in two separate gardens open to the public. Well, I know one is not supposed to pick the flowers but................
It looks a bit forboding .... so you don't have to tell me twice not to touch. Not a pretty flower but I like the colour.

@doblaine I thought the flower buds looked like closed up mussels.
Just been looking back at my rainbow challenge pics and I found that my very first post on day 1 of the colour red was the poisonous cuckoo pint??!!

@quietpurplehaze - LOL You have a talent for finding beauty among natures killers! Well they don't call toxic chemical management HAZCHEM for nothing. Ha Ha my little joke - I must be getting better.

@doblaine I'm just happy you are feeling well enough to make jokes!
What a day here, absolutely tipping down with rain and we were a bit lucky to have our walk before it got so bad but still all got wet, Jinks the worst with his low slung nature!! He's been trying to get up on the bed in here (spare room) but after several no's from me has gone in his own little bed on the landing. Nearly time for coffee and croissant methinks.

@quietpurplehaze Use time for Night night - have a nice day1

Nice capture of this very poisonous plant - it's a wonder the health & safety people haven't forbidden planting things like this in public spaces

Very interesting and informative! And a super shot of this scary plant.
September 23rd, 2012
That is kind of scary, but very beautiful and interesting to know.
September 23rd, 2012
I don't think I've ever seen it live and in flower. The poison garden at Alnwick CAstle is fascinating but it's very tempting to test them out!
September 23rd, 2012
@judithg Judith, please do not go to Alnwick Castle on your own!!
September 23rd, 2012
@quietpurplehaze I know - and I can't let Nigel near cliff edges!
September 23rd, 2012
I agree a bit scary .....but beautiful colors :)
September 24th, 2012
Beautiful, interesting shot! Wonderful dof! Fav! :)
September 24th, 2012
@paintdipper Thank you for your encouraging comments and especially for the Fav.
September 24th, 2012
@debihas27 I did have a bit of trouble deciding whether to include this in blue or purple week?!
September 24th, 2012
love all the 'veins' on it!
September 24th, 2012
It does look a bit forboding. They almost look like could open up and swallow you. Nice purple though.
September 24th, 2012
@quietpurplehaze I think it's perfect for purple.....what color did you find most difficult to find a weeks worth of shots?
September 24th, 2012
@debihas27 Thanks! I don't think any colour was more difficult than any other but I did get quite bored with green - also orange seemed to be a bit 'sinister' sometimes. How about you? I think after purple. this challenge has made me realise that red and then yellow are my favourites.
September 24th, 2012
@quietpurplehaze red was my favorite!!!!...........yellow & purple were good too. I thought orange was tough & green I agree boring!!! I'm glad it joined it was fun: )
September 26th, 2012
@debihas27 Yes, Debi I agree it was fun and I'm glad I did it too.
September 26th, 2012
Nice photo Hazel - hate to tell you but we have an Aconitum Napellus in our garden.
September 26th, 2012
@glenmoor Hmmm - I guess you've warned the grandchildren..... Is this the same one?
September 26th, 2012
@quietpurplehaze I have a feeling it's this variety: http://apps.rhs.org.uk/plantselector/plant?plantid=5437
The grandchildren prefer fish fingers!
September 26th, 2012
@glenmoor Well the blue is a bit bright in that shot but hard to tell.
September 26th, 2012
@quietpurplehaze Sorry Hazel I meant the one in our garden is probably Bressingham Spire.
