my French 'sun' (tomorrow's word) 'hat' (today's word)
Ray was adamant that he did not want to play today and put on his woolly winter hat and have his pic taken. So I've dug this 'non-selfie' (thanks Ray) selfie up from the holiday archive (2010) - it's a bit of clashing brightness (had bought the hat that morning and had to wear it) and silliness ........... I was on the balcony of an apartment we rented for a week with our friends Ellie and David in Dives-sur-Mer, which is still actually beside-the-seaside, contrary to some French towns which boast 'sur-Mer' in their name.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
Where did you get that hat? Where did you get that tile?
Isn't it a nobby one, and just the proper style?
I should like to have one Just the same as that!
Where'er I go, they shout Hello! Where did you get that hat?

@glenmoor Oh, thank you for the poetry - I knew half of line one but never realised it was a proper little ditty! (What's a 'tile' in this context?) btw I'm not exactly sure if one 'just the same as that' would really suit you?!
@tishpics Well I got the hat out today and looked at it longingly - really dithered over whether to post thIs shot but finally decided it was better than one of just the hat! Thank you for your comments!
@quietpurplehaze Tile is another (slang) word for a hat in some parts of the country (possibly Edwardian). I have always thought that it is because a hat protects your head from the weather as a tile protects the top of the building
@ness50 Vanessa, he was just going out the door for the wekekly ramble when I read him your comment - he guffawed - well maybe I could take a pic of him dressed up for the ramble another Wed?!
@pyrrhula Ferry, thank you very much for your kind comments as ever! (Sadly I am not actually on holiday in France now - as I said, this is an old holiday pic but the only one I had to put on for the word of 'hat'.) I did wonder if some of my followers would think me a bit exhibitionist so hesitated about putting this pic on - but nobody has said that (They may well be thinking it of course!!!)
@quietpurplehaze when I was at work as the pedlar's wife I had to be flamboyant. I was paid to be extrovert. It was.....difficult at first but then I discovered that it is FUN to be flamboyant, confident and extrovert. Go for it Hazel!
It is quite a long story really. I shall have to post some pictures sha'n't I. To cut it short. I made a few stumpwork figures to say "thank you" to the Fishguard Lifeboat for friendship, advice and help in choosing a boat and getting sailing again. The crew thought that I ught to be selling for myself and gave me addresses of shops they thought would be interested. I added tiny paintings, hand tatted lace and embroidery. Then recession set in and Frank and I joined re-enactment societies and became the pedlar and his wife (not forgetting their dog). We dressed in the costume suitable for the event and would sell our wares and also react to any characters who were part of the event. at folk festivals this would be the Mayor, the Town Crier, the Squires and Fools of the dancing sides, the Mummers and any other traders making spectacles of themselves. at historical events we usually had a Bishop (who would always denounce me as a heretic and threaten to excommunicate me), a slaver who wanted to sell me a girl or a small boy for a "boots", a drunken sailor and his wife. I would sympathise with the wife and he would try to steal my bag....this was an unscripted play which would unfold in the safety area and amuse and inform people who were not interested in the battle. We were also available to be hailed to answer questions and of course I had goods to sell. It was usually worth buying one of my smaller products just to be able to call "Ho, pedlar!" and explain to the younger members of the family that this was a mobile shop, like an ice cream van. That always involved buying something for "show-and-tell" on Monday morning! It involved wearing extrovert clothes and being larger-than-life. it got to be a habit...I'm afraid....I'll put a picture in January...7th I think it is.
@pyrrhula It was a lovely pic and thank you for all your kind and gentlemanly comments on my photos. (Hope those children are being good in class this week..........)
