'story': witch hazel - 'hamamelis rubinstar'

I always thought witch hazel only came in yellow.
Yesterday, my friend Sylv and I decided to have a trip to the arboretum. The winter garden was fabulous and full of flowers and blossom: snowdrops, daffodils, hellebores, cyclamen and daphne. The dogwood was colourful, some with yellow and some with red stems and some with both together. The silver birches had bark peeling in strange patterns from their trunks.
But what really captured my imagination was the witch hazel: red, orange and citrus or golden yellow.
This one was my favourite not only because of its vibrant colour but also for the gorgeous scent which hung in the air all around it.
We were lucky to go yesterday as this morning there is a snowy landscape here and it's still snowing heavily. We did need a cup of tea halfway round the arboretum as I had cold hands from taking the photos and Sylv (thanks Sylv)had cold hands from writing down the names of all the plants.

See the other colours in my other albums today.

Thanks for the story Hazel. This one is my favorite colour out of the three you have posted today. I think I should investigate the witch hazel to see if there is anything suitable for a smallish garden, given the name.

I had not idea there were all these other lovely colours - and nice to know this one retained its lovely scent. A very beautiful shot with bang on focus!

@purplehaze12 Snap - we have the favourite witch hazel colour in common too now! The perfume of this was unbelievable and you could smell it metres away. There were several smallish witch hazel bushes but don't know how slow growing or otherwise they are.

@tishpics Thanks for the comment on the focus - it ws quite tricky as, although it wasn't really windy, the branches quite often just seemed to be gently moving!

I love witch hazel - I've seen a few colours at Anglesey Abbey and there's a nice dark yellow in a rather unprepossessing garden down the road. This is a lovely close up.

@pyrrhula Well, an usual day for me as I haven't been out for a walk. (Ray took Jinks, who thought the snow was great fun!) The snow is about 10 cm thick and hardly any traffic on the roads.

@nicoleterheide I guess if you've never seen it before, it certainly is - looks as if it's having a 'bad hair' day! Wish I could post the gorgeous perfume.
