disaster for our garden 'birds' by quietpurplehaze

disaster for our garden 'birds'

This shot fell not exactly into my lap, but out of the conifer tree in our garden yesterday afternoon.
I did feel that the wood pigeons had chosen a precarious place to construct their 'slovenly built nest of dry twigs' (British Ornithologists' Guide to Bird Life). Wood pigeons nearly always lay 2 eggs, glossy white. So I've learnt something but I wonder what happens now. Will they build another nest?
lovely photo Hazel interesting story , just a little sence of Humour now looks like the flower is saying what are you doing on my patch of soil !!!!!! : - ) hmhm your a funny shape to be a flower

then it said you must be an Egg plant
April 3rd, 2013
So sad. You will have to observe them now and see what they do. I suspect they will rebuild, I hope so.

@gerry Haha! Good one Gerry!
April 3rd, 2013
@tishpics thank you Patricia I thought it might cheer Hazel up by seeing the Egg on the ground
April 3rd, 2013
@gerry Nice idea, and we all need cheering at the moment with this bitter weather!
April 3rd, 2013

What a shame. I am sure that they will rebuild. Good capture.

@gerry @tishpics @thresheg

The good news is that the nest didn't fall on Ray's head while he was gardening! It did one year but that was an already used nest!

Poor Humpty Dumpty ... even the daffodil appears to be crying at this sad sight.
April 3rd, 2013
Oh dear! Nature can be hard to watch. Hopefully it is early enough in the season for them to start again.

@wordpixman

I think it might have been in the line of fire so to speak!
April 3rd, 2013
@quietpurplehaze ... A stray shot no doubt, so far from Colchester!
April 3rd, 2013
Oh !! what a shame !! the weather has been bad enough without this happening !! Quite a sad scene with the daff's bowed head to add to the woe !
April 3rd, 2013
Unfortunately we don't like wood pigeons - not least because they have learnt how to balance to get seed etc from the seed feeder in our garden, frightening away and depriving the small birds - finches, tits and goldfinches from the nyjer seed. The description you give confirms our impression of them as lazy and fat! Sorry, but we hope they don't build another nest! Sorry everyone! Interesting and well taken picture though.

@ivan

I admit that I was interested to find the info about them and their 'slovenly nest' etc. I don't have a particular affection for them but it was rather amusing to read your view! (I did feel a bit sorry for one of the pair who seemed to be obviously looking for the disappeared nest this morning.)
April 3rd, 2013
Don't feel sory for them! See also views on Patricia's page today!

@ivan

What, worse than magpies?!
April 3rd, 2013
Yes, magpies are smart and industrious, they just have habits which to us are anti-social but to them are what they do as part of Nature!
April 3rd, 2013
wonderful capture!
April 3rd, 2013
Oh dear, humpty dumpty time
April 3rd, 2013
It is quite a sad shot. Hopefully they'll build another nest. Would love to be able to help out in these circumstances but know it'd be in vain :(
April 3rd, 2013
They nearly always try to raise two broods and sometimes three. There will be no shortage of wood pigeons as a result of this mishap!
April 3rd, 2013
Yes, that`s a part of there life. And food for other birds ( Crows )
Life is hard and then you die, Also to Pigenons
April 3rd, 2013
Terrific capture!
April 3rd, 2013
Oh dear what a shame
April 3rd, 2013
@pyrrhula

Are you feeling philosophical today?! (kidding) Strangely the unbroken egg is still there on the ground, uneaten still.
April 3rd, 2013
@glenmoor

I think I've learnt a lot of facts about wood pigeons as a result of this nest crashing down!
April 3rd, 2013
They really are scruffy nests - we had one last year on top of the pergola. I was amazed that it could hold an egg. I'm with Ivan - love birds but dislike Pigeons - not good for the veg patch!
April 3rd, 2013
A great thought provoking image. :-)
April 3rd, 2013
Sad for the birds, but at least they aren't subjected to the pigeon shoots we have here on the farmers field.
April 3rd, 2013
Oh how sad. Our friend who is in hospital has been watching wood pigeons building a nest in a tree outside his window. He said they have no idea!
April 3rd, 2013
Poor birds. They are not always the smartest when it comes to picking a place for a nest. A couple of years a ago a robin built a nest right above a public door to our library where there was a lot of activity.
April 4th, 2013
Pretty!
April 4th, 2013
The flower looks like it's commiserating! Great shot! :)
April 4th, 2013
interesting capture Hazel thanks for sharing!
April 4th, 2013
Very interesting. Hope they recover.
April 4th, 2013
What a great capture. Yes, the flower does look sympathetic!
