This shot fell not exactly into my lap, but out of the conifer tree in our garden yesterday afternoon.
I did feel that the wood pigeons had chosen a precarious place to construct their 'slovenly built nest of dry twigs' (British Ornithologists' Guide to Bird Life). Wood pigeons nearly always lay 2 eggs, glossy white. So I've learnt something but I wonder what happens now. Will they build another nest?
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...

@tishpics very true Patricia you just wont believe what i heard on the Radio this morning coming into work today overcast grey and this Afternoon Snow I will post a nice Bird photo tonight as the topic today is Bird have a lovely Day Patricia
Unfortunately we don't like wood pigeons - not least because they have learnt how to balance to get seed etc from the seed feeder in our garden, frightening away and depriving the small birds - finches, tits and goldfinches from the nyjer seed. The description you give confirms our impression of them as lazy and fat! Sorry, but we hope they don't build another nest! Sorry everyone! Interesting and well taken picture though.
I admit that I was interested to find the info about them and their 'slovenly nest' etc. I don't have a particular affection for them but it was rather amusing to read your view! (I did feel a bit sorry for one of the pair who seemed to be obviously looking for the disappeared nest this morning.)
They really are scruffy nests - we had one last year on top of the pergola. I was amazed that it could hold an egg. I'm with Ivan - love birds but dislike Pigeons - not good for the veg patch!
Poor birds. They are not always the smartest when it comes to picking a place for a nest. A couple of years a ago a robin built a nest right above a public door to our library where there was a lot of activity.
The good news is that the nest didn't fall on Ray's head while he was gardening! It did one year but that was an already used nest!
I think it might have been in the line of fire so to speak!

What, worse than magpies?!
Life is hard and then you die, Also to Pigenons
Are you feeling philosophical today?! (kidding) Strangely the unbroken egg is still there on the ground, uneaten still.
I think I've learnt a lot of facts about wood pigeons as a result of this nest crashing down!
