The abbey was built in the early 13th century by the then Bishop of Winchester. The white canons who lived there were so called because of their white habits. They lived a life of contemplation within the abbey: 8 services and Mass per day in the monastic church plus reading and studying, and also went out into the wider community.
A beautiful composition. I think it works very well in letterbox format with the subject off centre. It reminds me of our day out when we discovered the castle in Winchester!
Wonderful picture! Thanks for including the history. Colorado's recorded history is only about 150 years. I am always quite amazed by the ancient wonders you live with.
Beautiful panorama too. It is on lovely grounds.
Ha! Kane, I'm beginning to think that most habits are hard to break!!
Well Jonathon, I could have a try but not quite sure what you mean?!
I've visited many abbeys but not this one. Maybe someday!
Thank you for comment and fav. For some reason I cannot quite explain, this abbey, above all the others in the area, draws me in.
