a country house

Uppark House, now a National Trust property, has beautiful open views of the Downs.

I stood with my back to the dairy on the estate to take this shot. In 1825 the 70-year old owner, Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh scandalized social circles by marrying Mary Ann Bullock, his 20-year old dairymaid.

In 1846 Mary Ann inherited the estate on the death of Sir Harry and continued to live there with her sister.

H G Wells' mother was housekeeper for a time at Uppark and he spent some of his boyhood there:
“I hated tea time … They sat about in black and shiny and flouncey clothing … eating great quantities of cake …I remember these women as immense. Tea lasted for nearly three quarters of an hour…and day after day the talk was exactly the same”
An Experiment in Autobiography / H. G. Wells

@wordpixman

I have had some of those experiences too! I'd like to look inside this pad, but each time we've been only the basement has been open (which I don't really fancy) and just the ground floor is open for a certain part of the week.

Karin, no problem. I do try to limit myself to posting just 2 photos per day - but sometimes that doesn't work either! I get carried way and post more. It's good to have you back.
