The last in my rainbow series: the main pic shows the highly poisonous deadly nightshade aka atropa belladonna.
Its name, 'belladonna', comes from its use by Venetian women to make themselves 'beautiful ladies' by causing their pupils to dilate.
The combination of this use with its ability to kill gives it a romantic attraction which is hard to beat. Add to that the hallucinations it may also cause and its fascination is complete.
(info from poison garden website)
I knew that deadly nightshade is, like the potato, in the solanaceae family. In my research I found that aubergines, chili peppers and bell peppers are all in this family.
The other flowers in my purple collage are, from top right: penstemmon, forget-me-not, hellebore and lilac.
I found my deadly nightshade over the fields whilst walking the camera (not Jinks).
Kim, thanks - have to see if I can do another with a different subject matter!
