On a Saturday morning Joshua volunteers as a welcoming steward at Winchester Cathedral. You can just see the red robe which these volunteers wear on duty. Most are of a quite different age group.
Joshua was quite happy to have his portrait taken. I began speaking with him as a result of unexpectedly finding Brother Andrew, who featured earlier in my portrait series, welcoming visitors yesterday.
Joshua is at college studying history, politics and economics. In his free time he likes playing the trumpet, especially the music of Haydn.
You can no doubt identify that there was side light on this portrait. It was coming from the main doorway to the cathedral. I forgot to double check the camera and had left it in the wrong mode for portraits but I think it coped really well with my forgetfulness. Note to self for next time!
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
What a kind hearted young man. A lovely portrait too. I have been trying some portrait work with my new speedlights, with not much success yet. I'm sure I will more proficient after the lighting and posing workshop next month.
A very worthy young man.....not your run of the mill chap but one with plenty going for him. The light at the side of his face lightens it beautifully.
I do too, usually, but this time I had left the camera on s mode from a previous shot - I think it did pretty well!!!!! (That's my note to self for future portraits!)
p.s. I always like the portraits of Brother Andrew: he is always sitting down because of problems with his feet and I am always standing up! Maybe I should experiment with the tilting screen when subjects are standing?
Very impressive to find a young man who plays Haydn on the trumpet! Yes, it would be nice to have the light falling evenly across his face, but I don't think this is really all that bad as is. I guess it's the difference between good and better.
It doesn't feel at all brave but perhaps my subconscious is filtering out people before I ask them. I have been used to working with folk from all walks of life - could not have done this when I was, say, aged 20!

Sandy, I really appreciate your comment, thanks!
