Bank Holiday Sunday - getting the Dole

Gerry and Anne drove down for lunch with us yesterday. Too long since we had seen them and it was good to meet up again.

In the afternoon, we suggested a visit to the Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty in Winchester.

This was Anne and Gerry's first visit to St Cross and Ray introduced them to the Wayfarer's Dole: a small beaker of ale and a piece of bread.

This can be claimed at the Porter's Lodge and is a custom which was started for travellers by a monk in Cluny, France.

The weather for our day was warm and sunny. Also in my collage, the Brothers' quarters and the pond in the Master's garden.

"On the dole" Unemployment Benefit has been known by the slang term 'the dole' since WWI. This derives from the 'doling out', that is, 'handing out' of charitable gifts of food or money.
