I used to sew loads: my wedding dress, going-away outfit, dressing gown for Ray, all sorts for the children, curtains (why, when you had carefully measured before you started, did one always hang a fraction longer than the other at the window...)
Now I only do the minimum such as mending, when I cannot avoid it.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
Love this macro. I don’t even like to mend anymore because it is so hard to thread a needle. I remember so clearly doing that often for my grandmother.
Lovely photo and nice memories.
I used to do lots of sewing too. My mum had a sewing machine and did lovely things when I was young...there was a gorgeous pink party dress that my sisters wore as they grew to fit it.😊
And when Allan and I got engaged my granny gave me money to buy a sewing machine so I could make dresses for the wedding! I did for 4 bridesmaids but bought my own dress so there was no sense of 'mistakes' on the day!! The books that could be written!!
Beautiful macro and great narrative. I too made most of my clothes and all those of my girls till they reached a certain age. Osteo arthritis has struck, and I am pretty useless now ;-)
How beautiful, and such a lovely narrative and POV. My mother sewed all her own clothes and often mine too. She taught me to sew, but I never had the patience that she possessed. I just wanted it finished! However, it has stood me in good stead, even if, like you, Hazel, all I ever do these days is mend things, when necessary. I'd never want to be without a sewing machine though. :-)
I used to sew a lot too, curtains, clothes, bags…now my sewing machine is used very seldom. Buying clothes is so much easier and, for the most part, not much more expensive. I still do make curtains occasionally but somehow, nowadays, it is without the anticipation and excitement that I used to feel. Now it’s just more of a chore to be accomplished.
I used to do a lot of sewing when my kids were little. My daughter danced from age 4 to 17 so there were also heaps of leotards and costumes to be made. Now, I don't use my machines very often but I'm glad that I still have them for the times that I want to play, repair something or as is more often the case, to take up hems on trousers which are usually too long for me.
Beautiful close up.
My mother used to sew almost all the dresses of me and my sister. She always went to the market to buy fabrics (is that the correct word?). On family photos my sister and I often wear the same dresses.
Yes, 'fabric' is a good word, can also use 'material'. It was the same for my sister and me - I might have a dress in yellow material and she would have the same but in the pink colourway.
Great close up capture. I wish I could still do a little sewing when needed I can no longer hold a needle and threading would be impossible with my shaky hands. I used to make all my daughters clothes when she was smaller and my own outfits. I don't know how I found the time to knit and crochet as well.
A lovely up close photo of the needle.
My mum was a sewer too making her own clothes & mine & my sisters too. I watched & knew the basics but was put off completely by our needlework teacher at school. We made dreary things like aprons & head to unpick regularly which was off putting. I inherited her Singer sewing machine but only made a few dresses for my daughter when small & curtains! I don’t do any seeing at all now unless forced into it.

Issi, I find that not having a sewing machine I am freed from those jobs which need one!!
I'm not good at the threading of needles now!

Joanne, I think I can 'ditto' all that you say!

My mother used to make me costumes for tap and ballet dancing. I loved it all!
