'architecture': the new church in Royan, south west France.

l'église Notre Dame: it replaced the former neo-Gothic church destroyed during the WW2 bombardments in January 1945.

It was rebuilt larger than the former church and with an ambitious and spectacular architecture. It was finished in 1958 and was classified as a historical monument in 1988.

It is built completely of steel re-inforced concrete. The sand used with the cement was from the beach; consequently its high salt content means that the metal structure in the concrete is rusting, necessitating restoration work.

I was in awe of this church the first time I saw it on my first visit to France aged 16 and thought it was a cathedral.; but had a more ambivalent view when Ray and I revisited it a few years ago. It can be seen from all over Royan.

WOW! Can't decide if I like it or not! Hard to imagine something like this being built in the 1950's!

Very interesting. It's something I'd like to see for myself.

looks not so invited to me and a church has to do that I suppose. We rebuilt most of the buildings from that time . Has no great architectural value and the quality is poor.
You`ve capture it greatly and the collage shows the church from different angle`s very well
