Passage du Gois

This is the causeway over to Ile de Noirmoutier which is only accessible in a certain 'window' before and after low tide. If you misjudge it, the pic top right shows you where you can climb up to safety. Guess you would have to let your car float away on the incoming tide. We were amazed to find so many families had parked their cars each side of the causeway and were searching for seafood on the recently uncovered sand. We also saw on TV cyclists racing along a very narrow stretch across the causeway with the water lapping at their pedals.
How interesting! Imagine having to clamber up the pole to safety! Makes me shudder to think of the sea rolling in, although we do risk a similar fate here in going to eat sea food at West Mersea which is linked to the mainland by a causeway. Once we went with friends separately in our cars and they got across and could have lunch and we had to wait for an hour before we could join them!

That's interesting - staggered lunch! There is also another type of 'refuge' at intervals along the causeway which is more like just a pole and looks much more scary!

As we live in a delta area there is plenty of water. we too often see lots of people ( often from SE Asia, Vietnam ) searching for seafood .
