and very nice it is too

Over dinner we had one of those discussions: When is a pie a tart?

Any answers?!
A pie has a bottom and a top or just a top. A tart just has a bottom and never a top. Probably wrong in my thinking but there it is. Both are yummy.

I agree with @newbank a pie has a lid as well as a bottom. A tart is a women of dubious virtue!
Love this green photo of Maggies mint jelly.......goes with lamb I presume but it looks fresh & tasty.

I always thought a pie has just a top and a tart a bottom and a top but not a very deep filling. A flan has a bottom but never a top. Nice capture and processing.

Lovely capture of the mint jelly!!! And I don't have any idea but hope to learn from your comments here!!! We bake pies in Texas and sometimes they have a top crust and a bottom crust, and sometimes they just have a bottom crust, but we don't bake tarts.

I agree with the above a pie has a top and bottom and a tart only has a bottom. Which I guess makes a tart topless. Nice shot and processing.

Thanks, all, for comments, pie-related or otherwise! This arose because I had made what I called a mincemeat and apple tart with some of my home made mincemeat and some Bramley apples, about 8" diameter, round, shallow and filled with the mixture. The discussion progressed from usual tarts and pies to shepherd's pie, fish pie etc.......... Ray even consulted the dictionary.
