In the early 1900s, the diver, William Walker, heroically saved the foundations of Winchester Cathedral. Now, the eastern roof needs repairs so this huge roof-shaped scaffolding was due to be lifted up, jigsaw-like, by a giant crane.
Unfortunately technical problems prevented it happening yesterday when we had gone to watch. Scheduled for today now but I have a rendezvous with a swimming pool this morning and one with a friend for tea and cake this afternoon. So I'm relying on local TV news tonight.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
Ah, that's where you heard it. I would have liked to go back and get shots of the bits of the scaffolding going up but was a bit concerned it might just be waiting about like yesterday. If I hadn't had anything else planned, maybe I would have made the effort.
That is so cool. We had something similar a few years ago, when they lifted the light and top rooms from a lighthouse out at sea in a rock here and helicoptered it in to town, repaired it, lifted it to return it, dropped it, repaired it again, lifted it and took it back and gently replaced it on the stone tower
Enjoy your day too, Claire. I hope all is well with you and yours.
Great pictures

Thanks for your interest. That sounds like a very delicate operation!
I saw it go into place on TV tonight. Now, of course, I wish I'd gone back for the second day!!!
