Hairy Woodpecker

Another bird that frequents our backyard feeder. The feet of woodpeckers have two toes facing forward and two facing backward. These clamping feet coupled with a stiff tail enable these birds to stay vertical against a tree trunk.

Thank you for the comments on my snowy backyard from yesterday, much appreciated.
Terrific detail - lovely capture! fav!

Is it just me, or does he looked tired of having to pound his head into a tree trunk? Also, tell me he's down low to the ground rather than your snow being six feet high on that tree. Maybe THAT's why Mr. WoodyP looks disgruntled.

Gosh, you gave me a feeling that he has been hit by two arrows. Beautiful bird.

Aww sweet capture.

Wow - great capture! The only woodpeckers I've managed to spot have been too well hidden amongst the branches for me to get a clear shot. Fingers crossed the snow will disappear soon!
