The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, also known as the Pink Palace of the Pacific, was one of the first hotels opened on the beach in Waikiki in 1927. Built by shipping magnet William Matson at a cost of $4 million, it was originally a royal estate with lush tropical gardens that fronted on the ocean. Closed during WWII, it became a rest spot for U.S. submariners. The architecture is a distinctive combination of Spanish cupolas and Moorish arches. Its famous pink exterior marks the iconic hotel as the flagship of Honolulu. The Royal has undergone a number of renovations in 87 years, and has hosted heads of state and Hollywood stars. Numerous films and television shows have been filmed on the property. It was a thrill to be able to stay at this exquisite, historic resort.
